Cosmopolitan Jazz Quartet - this depicts one of several musical groups I was in between 1963 and 1983 when my stage name was Billy Rich. I always believed in using a bass player until adopting the organ, and refused to tolerate any but the best percussionists after some early disappointments. Of course, when I became a one-man-band, the drummer was replaced digitally. Funny how it always showed up on time, never complained about money or ran off with the female vocalist. It never got drunk or took drugs except during blackouts, which is understandable. Sax Man - This, unfortunately, was intended to be me, but looks more like a young Coltrane. Never been very successful with faces. Matador - Every painter worth his salt tackles this motif. Bus Stop - Depicting the differences between waiting people, the calm, organized lady on the far right, the petulant one beside her, the collected man trying to retain control, and the frantic, hysterical one on the left. Progress The dray pulls the tractor, a statement about technology.
Changes River Journey - Depicting salmon, Cohoe, going upriver to spawn, with obstacles. Sea Battle - Intended to show the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 Crevasse - My conception of the Himalayan ranges.
Natural Pronouncements Earthquake - Depicting the Australian Ayer's Rock with a frantic, frilled lizard Walrus Spa - Big daddy walrus with his harem, a waterspout and a sperm whale Eruption - Volcanic eruption plus spitting cobras feeling threatened by a tree.
Surreal Humor Poor Robin - The Sea Robin (a real fish) steals the robin's worm. Roundup - A bevy of complacent sea horses are led to corral by a 3-toed sloth Polar Nightmare The polar bear and Southern Emperor penguins are puzzled by leaping Springboks.
Endangered Species Flood - A giraffe munches while an ape dabs his toe as the Meercats gaze. Fire - A tiger, eland and rhino escape the jungle. Stiff Wind - An eagle battles the wind as a praying mantis and butterly use his body to seek better shelter.
Classical Femmes Sea Witch - Happy with one destruction, she seeks more.
Family Portraits Tongue Tied - A slight miscalculation for the chameleon and the frog. Sea Lion Picnic - Papa watches while the kitteals observe liones (mama) get lunch (antelish). Paradise - For a friend, who deserves it.
For those interested, I use the cheapest paint available, the kind offered to elementary school students and some tubes for hard-to-get colors. After all, why should I pay for exceptionally high-priced material when I can afford elegant crap? My canvasses are 4 X 10 inch mat board, sometimes referred to as photo-rag. I am planning to expand to 8 X 10 in the near future. |

Sandra and I coined this term which means fragmented or spattered to indicate a technique of watercolor application I invented in the 60s. I never believed I would return to painting, but after writing 20 novels, was looking for new inspiration and decided to try. It was my left hand that suffered nerve damage in the 80s, not my right. I was surprised to discover I retained my "fist" (touch.) In any case, these are my first attempts using this technique. Click the title links. |
